Roaming vs eSIM
International Day Pass uses your home plan in Japan for $12 a day, and AT&T stops charging after 10 billed days in a cycle, per its day-pass page, checked late September 2026. Fairer than most; still triple one eSIM.
$12 per day per line, $6 per day for additional lines on the account, unlimited talk, text and your plan's data, billed only on days used. After 10 charged days per line in a bill cycle, the daily fee stops, roughly a $120 ceiling, per att.com.
Like Verizon's pass, it starts on first use: an inbox sync at the gate is a $12 day. Roaming off, or a plan for it, before wheels down.
One week: about $84 on Day Pass versus $33.68 for unlimited on KDDI or $12.44 for 10GB, the live catalog checked October 22, 2026. Two weeks: the cap helps AT&T, about $120, versus $66.70 unlimited or $21.84 for 20GB. The eSIM stays cheaper in every column, and couples pay per line on AT&T.
Very short trips, work phones you cannot touch, or if you truly need your US number live for calls all day. For everyone else: eSIM for data and AT&T data roaming off. A call or text on the AT&T number can still start a $12 day, so call over apps on the eSIM data.
$12 per day, $6 per day for extra lines, with daily fees stopping after 10 charged days per line in a bill cycle, per AT&T's page.
Yes, on first data use abroad. Turn the line's data roaming off if you plan to use an eSIM instead.
For a week, roughly a third of the cost; even against AT&T's 10-day fee cap a two-week eSIM stays cheaper, and each extra traveler saves again.
