Roaming vs eSIM

Optus in Japan: A$5 a day is honestly decent

Credit where due: Optus's A$5 roaming pass with 5GB per 24 hours is the fairest big-carrier deal in this series, per optus.com.au, checked late September 2026. It still is not free, and the fine print matters.

What Optus charges

A$5 per 24 hours in Japan on eligible postpaid plans: 5GB of data plus unlimited standard talk and text in-zone and back to Australia. The pass ends at 24 hours or when the 5GB is gone, whichever comes first, per optus.com.au.

The fine print

Eligible postpaid plans only; prepaid and some plans miss out. Each 24 hour window is its own pass, and a heavy day can end it before the 24 hours are up. Data does not roll over.

The week math

Seven days is A$35, honestly reasonable. One eSIM: 10GB for a week at $12.44 or unlimited at $33.68, the live catalog checked October 22, 2026. On a light week Optus roughly ties; on a heavy or longer trip the eSIM's fixed price and 30 day validities pull ahead, and it works on prepaid and every other carrier too.

The verdict

Short trip on an eligible Optus postpaid plan: the pass is fine, use it, we said so. Prepaid, longer trips, or data-heavy days: eSIM for data, Optus line on for calls with data roaming off.

Straight answers

How much is Optus roaming in Japan?

A$5 per 24 hours with 5GB and unlimited standard calls and texts, on eligible postpaid plans.

Is the Optus roaming pass better than an eSIM?

On a short, light trip with an eligible plan it roughly ties. For prepaid users, long stays or heavy data, a travel eSIM costs less and the data does not expire nightly.

Does the Optus pass work on prepaid?

No. It applies to eligible postpaid plans; prepaid travelers need a travel eSIM or local SIM.
