eSIM or pocket WiFi
For one traveler the math has flipped: a week of rental fees buys a whole eSIM bucket. The rental still wins three cases, and we name them.
Pocket Wi-Fi: a rented hotspot you collect, carry, charge nightly and return. eSIM: a data plan your phone installs from a QR code. Nothing to pick up, nothing to lose.
Rentals commonly run a few hundred to around a thousand yen per day, so a week costs roughly one 10GB eSIM: ours is $12.44 and 5GB is $9.33, the live catalog checked October 22, 2026. The rental adds a deposit and loss fees; the eSIM has neither.
A group of four sharing one connection. A phone with no eSIM support: dial *#06#, no EID means no eSIM. And all-day multi-device sharing on a dedicated battery.
Everything else. No pickup queue, no return deadline, no nightly charging, no deposit. It works the minute you land, and an unused plan can be refunded under its package terms.
A phone eSIM can hotspot a laptop for the odd hour; most of our plans allow it, rule at checkout. One person, one phone, occasional laptop: eSIM, and it is not close.
For one traveler, usually not: a week of rental fees typically costs as much as a whole 10GB eSIM, and the rental adds deposit and loss-fee risk. For a group of four sharing one device, the rental can win on price.
For occasional email, yes, via the phone's hotspot on plans that allow it. For all-day multi-device sharing, a dedicated hotspot or a large fixed bucket is the honest recommendation.
No. There is nothing physical. When the plan ends it simply stops, and you can delete the eSIM profile whenever you like.
