Disclosure: ESIM KIMONO is our store. Competitor facts come from their own pages and public reviews, checked 13 October 2026, each linked.
Short answer: Saily is a well-rated provider, but for a short trip with heavy data it fits badly: its Japan unlimited starts at 15 days and slows to up to 1 Mbps after 5GB a day. ESIM KIMONO sells unlimited from 3 days at a flat 10 Mbps with no daily data cap, on KDDI, delivered as a QR code by email with no app or account.
You land at Haneda after a long flight. One of you films for a small channel, so the plan was simple: post the first clip from the monorail. The eSIM was meant to start when you reached Japan. It did not. The app will not link to the line, the QR code never arrived, and the queue at the SIM counter is long, passports out.
Later that week, in Hakone, the data dies mid-afternoon. No map to the ropeway, no taxi app, and the card terminal at a small café wants a QR payment you cannot load.
The fix is not glamorous: a known carrier, a speed rule you can read before you pay, a person who answers, and a replacement if the eSIM is faulty.
Saily's Japan unlimited starts at 15 days. For a 6-day trip, that is a mismatch. Our unlimited comes in 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days, so the plan matches the trip.
Saily's unlimited is "5GB/Day without a speed limit", then "up to 1 Mbps" (saily.com). Filming and posting clips can pass 5GB in a day, and at 1 Mbps uploads stall. Ours is a flat 10 Mbps from the first minute. That is honest about its limit too: fine for Reels, Shorts, maps and calls, not for raw 4K uploads (fair use).
Saily runs through its app. In our sample of 26 recent Japan-related 1-2★ reviews, several describe app or QR issues:
Of those 26 complaints, 14 involved no connection or dropouts and 11 involved slow data. Two said traffic routed through Hong Kong and blocked some apps (example). That is a handful of reviews against a 4.7★ average from 32,244 reviews (Trustpilot), but it is why people search for alternatives.

Our plans are data only, with no phone number. Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi before you fly, so landing is just a switch.
When to stay with Saily: you want app top-ups, a US number add-on, "limitless" hotspot sharing, or a long Trustpilot record. Those are real strengths, and we do not have them.
For the couple, one 7-day unlimited plan for the filmmaker and a fixed plan for the partner covers maps, train routes, translation and messages, with no app on either phone.
