Arrival paperwork
Visit Japan Web is Japan's official, free arrival service by the Digital Agency. Set it up before you fly and one QR code covers both immigration and the customs declaration.
No. Paper arrival and customs forms still work at every airport, and you will not be refused entry without it. It is worth the ten minutes anyway: one QR instead of two forms, and the e-Gates at Japan's seven international airports read it with your IC passport, per Japan Customs.
On the official site, free, in a browser, no app: create an account, enter your passport, register the trip with your flight and address in Japan, answer the customs questions, and save the QR it issues. Do it before departure, at home, on Wi-Fi.
Since January 2024 a single QR covers immigration and customs, and every traveler clears the terminal one by one, so each family member needs their own procedure. Screenshot the QR before you land; do not count on arrival-hall Wi-Fi to load an email.
Japan's electronic travel authorization, JESTA, is targeted for fiscal 2028 and applies to visa-exempt nationals when it launches. There is no official JESTA portal in 2026. Any site selling JESTA registration today is a scam; close the tab.
The QR itself works offline from your camera roll. Everything after arrivals, trains, maps, the hotel pin, runs on data. Install the eSIM at home in the same sitting as your Visit Japan Web setup and both are done before the airport.
No. Paper forms remain available at every airport. It is optional and free, and it saves queue time at the e-Gates.
Each traveler clears immigration and the customs terminal individually, so make sure each person has their own QR saved.
Not if you screenshot the QR before landing. Save it to your camera roll next to your boarding pass.
