Disclosure: ESIM KIMONO is our store. Competitor facts come from their own pages and public reviews, checked 13 October 2026, each linked.
Short answer: Airalo is a large multi-country brand whose Japan unlimited plans run at full speed for 3GB per 24 hours, then drop to 1 Mbps. ESIM KIMONO is a Japan-only store on KDDI with a flat 10 Mbps from the first minute and no daily data cap, so 9pm feels like 9am. Pick Airalo for one account across many countries; pick us for a speed rule you can read before paying and a human who answers.
It is 9pm at Haneda. The phone says "No Service", and the hotel is an hour away by train. At the SIM counter a queue has formed, passports out. Without data there is no map to the right platform, no message to the friend waiting in Shinagawa, no translation app for the ticket machine.
The rest of the week brings smaller versions: a map that stops loading in a station you can't read, a QR payment at the till that needs data, the day's photos sitting unsent.
So this page compares what decides those moments: network, speed rule, hotspot, support, and what happens when something fails. Not the price.
| Airalo | ESIM KIMONO | |
|---|---|---|
| Network in Japan | SoftBank plus one other network, per its Japan page | KDDI 4G/5G, a licensed Japanese carrier |
| Unlimited speed rule | Full speed for 3GB per 24 hours from activation, then 1 Mbps until the period resets (fair use policy) | Flat 10 Mbps from the first minute, no daily data cap (/fup/) |
| Hotspot | Allowed; counts toward the 3GB a day on unlimited (review) | Allowed on most plans; each plan's rule is printed at checkout |
| Support | Help centre and support chat (Airalo help) | Real humans on chat and [email protected] |
| Change of mind | 14 days, before activation only; "wrong purchase" and "plans changed" refunds are paid as Airmoney credit (Airalo help) | Unused plans refunded under package terms (/help/) |
| Faulty eSIM | Replacement or refund; partly used plans refund only the unused portion; card refunds can take up to 30 business days (terms) | Replaced one for one |
Our fixed plans run at full network speed, then slow to 384 kbps once the data is used, so messages and maps still crawl through until the plan ends.
Maps all morning, stories from Senso-ji, a video call at lunch, photos backed up on the train: a heavy day can pass 3GB by late afternoon. From then until the 24-hour period resets, Airalo runs at 1 Mbps. Maps and messages still work; video calls and stories struggle.
Our unlimited plans have no daily line to cross. The cap is 10 Mbps from the first minute to the last, which covers maps, transit, camera translation, video calls and HD streaming. It is not enough for 4K video or large laptop downloads, and our fair use page says so.
To be fair: on a quiet 5G cell, Airalo's first 3GB each day will download faster than our 10 Mbps cap. If you stay under 3GB a day, that suits you.
On Trustpilot, Airalo has a TrustScore of 4.1 from 47,122 reviews. 62.3% are 5-star and 20.1% are 1 or 2 stars (trustpilot.com). Those figures cover every country, not just Japan.
We read the most recent 1-2 star reviews that mention Japan. Of 40, 28 described a bad experience there, and 20 of those were about the eSIM not connecting or stopping mid-trip. Four were about slow speed on unlimited. In their words:
On Reddit, a traveler in Tokyo on a 15-day unlimited plan reported "less than 1 MBPS down", while someone in the same thread on a 20GB fixed plan saw "200mbps on 5G" (r/Airalo). That contrast follows from the 3GB-then-1 Mbps rule.
This is a small, self-selected sample; many r/JapanTravelTips posters say Airalo "worked very well" (thread). No provider, us included, can promise a perfect signal in every tunnel.
If Japan is one stop on a multi-country trip, one Airalo account covers more than Japan, and its review base is far larger than ours. If you use under 3GB a day, its full-speed bursts beat our cap.
ESIM KIMONO is run by Fizen LLC. Fizen.io has 500,000+ app users and a strategic investment from Tether. The plan sits on KDDI, a licensed Japanese network, using a GSMA standard eSIM profile. Card payments run on Stripe, which is PCI DSS Level 1.
The QR code arrives by email within minutes, with no account and no app. Install it on home Wi-Fi before you fly. It is data only, with no phone number. If it fails, a faulty eSIM is replaced one for one, and our airport rescue card walks you through the five checks that fix most "No Service" screens.
Airalo fits if you are visiting several countries, you stay under 3GB a day, or you prefer managing everything in one app.
ESIM KIMONO fits if your trip is Japan only, you post and call every evening and want the same speed at night, you want the network named on the plan, and you want a person to answer when you land.
For many travelers, yes: a 4.1 TrustScore from 47,122 reviews (13 October 2026). Recent Japan complaints are mostly eSIMs that won't connect or stop mid-trip, and slow unlimited speeds after the daily 3GB.
By default, 3GB at full speed per 24 hours from activation, then 1 Mbps until the period resets, per Airalo's fair use policy.
We don't compete on price. Plans are priced for a carrier-grade network and a human who answers. Today's price is on the button below.
Airalo's Japan page lists SoftBank plus one other network. ESIM KIMONO uses KDDI 4G/5G.
Yes on most plans. On Airalo unlimited, hotspot data counts toward the 3GB a day. On ours, each plan prints its hotspot rule at checkout.
