Short answer: if your Airalo eSIM is misbehaving in Japan, spend five minutes on the checks below first; they fix most "No Service" screens with any brand. If it is still slow or dead, install a second eSIM over hotel Wi-Fi tonight and keep Airalo on the phone in case it recovers. Choose the alternative by your problem: a dead connection, slow evenings on unlimited, or wanting a different network.
You are in an Osaka station with your family and the map has stopped loading. The kids are tired, the taxi app spins, the ticket machine is in Japanese. Back at the hotel the eSIM shows full bars and almost no data. Tomorrow's train leaves at 8am.
You need to know whether this is a setting, a rule, or a broken eSIM, and what to do before morning.
Most eSIM "failures" are one of four settings. Our rescue card works for every brand, Airalo included.
Slow on unlimited? Check today's usage. Airalo's policy says that after 3GB in a 24-hour period, speed drops to 1 Mbps until the period resets, counted from activation, not from midnight (Airalo fair use policy). Past 3GB by mid-afternoon means nothing is broken: maps and messages run, video calls struggle.
If you still have no bars, contact Airalo support first, and don't delete the eSIM while you wait.
On Airalo's Trustpilot (13 October 2026: 4.1 TrustScore, 47,122 reviews, 20.1% of them 1-2 stars, source), we read the latest 1-2 star reviews that mention Japan. Of 28 describing a bad experience there, 20 were about the eSIM not connecting or stopping mid-trip:
Most Airalo customers never hit this; 62.3% of its reviews are 5-star.
Most modern phones store several eSIM profiles and use one at a time for data.
One warning for every brand: don't delete an eSIM to "reinstall" it. Most QR codes install only once.
| Your problem | Consider | Network | Speed rule | Hotspot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unlimited gets slow every evening | ESIM KIMONO | KDDI 4G/5G | Flat 10 Mbps, no daily data cap (/fup/) | Most plans; rule printed at checkout |
| Same, but you burst usage on some days | Ubigi | NTT Docomo and KDDI | 25GB at full speed per 7-day plan, then 2 Mbps (Ubigi) | Not compared |
| You want a higher daily allowance | Saily | KDDI and SoftBank | 5GB a day at full speed, then up to 1 Mbps (saily.com) | "Limitless hotspot sharing" |
| You'd rather have fixed data than unlimited | Nomad | KDDI au / SoftBank (getnomad.app) | Fixed data plans | Not compared |
Need a Japanese phone number? Mobal sells voice plans (mobal.com); ESIM KIMONO is data only. Where rivals are genuinely stronger: Ubigi adds Docomo, and Saily advertises unlimited hotspot sharing.
Four things, all in writing:
ESIM KIMONO is run by Fizen LLC; Fizen.io has 500,000+ app users and a strategic investment from Tether. Payments run on Stripe, PCI DSS Level 1.
On unlimited, likely Airalo's fair use rule: after 3GB in a 24-hour period, speed drops to 1 Mbps until it resets. On fixed plans, check Data Roaming, the data line and Wi-Fi Calling, then contact Airalo.
Yes. Most eSIM phones store several profiles; choose which one carries data in settings.
That depends on Airalo's terms. A faulty eSIM can get a replacement or refund, only for the unused portion if partly used.
Buy an alternative over hotel Wi-Fi, scan the emailed QR from a second screen, switch your data line and turn on Data Roaming.
