Data math
A Japan day is maps, trains, translate and photos, and each has a known appetite. Add yours up and the right plan falls out.
Maps and transit: tens of megabytes a day. Camera translate: light. Chat: nothing until someone sends video. Social scrolling: about 1GB per video-heavy hour. Streaming and video calls: about 1GB per HD hour. Photo backup: set it to Wi-Fi only before you fly.
1 to 1.5GB a day in practice. A week fits inside 10GB for a week at $12.44, the live catalog checked October 22, 2026, with margin. 5GB for a week at $9.33 covers the disciplined version.
2 to 4GB a day, driven by uploads. 20GB across 15 days at $21.84 fits a two-week shoot. Sustained big uploads will feel the unlimited plan's 10 Mbps cap; read the fair use page first.
Wi-Fi carries the heavy hours; mobile data is the glue. 10GB across 30 days at $14.55 is the workhorse. 20GB across 30 days at $22.89 adds hotspot afternoons and video calls from the park.
Fixed plans drop to 384 kbps when the bucket empties, enough to message and decide. Most of our eSIMs do not top up: more data means a fresh eSIM, installed in the same two minutes.
For maps, trains, translate and chat with photos saved to Wi-Fi, yes for most people. Add daily social video posting and it gets tight; 10GB removes the worry for a small step up.
For a light user leaning on hotel Wi-Fi, often yes. Our 10GB bucket also comes in a 30 day validity, so the days are not the constraint; the video habit is.
Most of our Japan eSIMs do not recharge. Buying more data means a new eSIM, installed in about two minutes, and your number and home line are unaffected.
