Holafly vs ESIM KIMONO for Japan

Disclosure: ESIM KIMONO is our store. Competitor facts come from their own pages and public reviews, checked 13 October 2026, each linked.

Short answer: both sell unlimited Japan data with no total cap. The difference is how each limits you. Holafly says a fair usage policy can slow you "for no more than one (1) day" and doesn't publish the threshold; hotspot is capped at 1GB a day. ESIM KIMONO publishes one rule, a flat 10 Mbps on KDDI from the first minute with no daily data cap, so you know your speed before you land.

What happens when unlimited stops feeling unlimited?

It is your fourth evening in Osaka. You have filmed the Dotonbori lights, the group chat wants the clip, and your partner is waiting for the FaceTime you promised the kids at home. The bars are full. The upload sits at 12%. Google Maps takes five seconds to draw the walk back to the hotel.

You bought unlimited so you would never think about data. Now you are on a bridge, refreshing. This page compares what each product promises for that moment: network, speed rule, hotspot, support, and what happens when something fails. Not the price.

What do travelers report about Holafly in Japan?

On Trustpilot, Holafly has a 4.7 TrustScore from 114,820 reviews. 84.4% are 5-star and 7.4% are 1 or 2 stars (trustpilot.com). A strong score, and a far larger review base than ours.

In Japan specifically, the recent 1-2 star reviews we read were few: 9 described a bad experience there, and 7 of them were about slow speed even with full signal. In travelers' words:

On Reddit, one Japan traveler reported that support said the operator had reduced speed "to 0" after high-speed data ran out "after less than three hours", and that the threshold "cannot be shared" (r/eSIMs). Another measured "ping… always 600ms+" in Japan and Korea (r/eSIMs).

To be fair, others write "Holafly unlimited plan is treating me well" (r/JapanTravelTips). Most people are fine. The risk sits mainly with heavy users, who are exactly the people who buy unlimited.

What does a flat 10 Mbps mean for a heavy user?

The same speed at 10am and 10pm, with no allowance to trip. Ten megabits covers maps, transit, camera translation, chat, video calls, HD streaming and social. It is not enough for 4K streaming or a laptop downloading large files over hotspot, and our fair use page says so. For a laptop-heavy trip, a large fixed plan at full network speed is the better tool. See business travel.

We can't promise speed beyond our network and cap. We do promise no hidden threshold.

Where is Holafly the stronger choice?

Holafly sells plans up to 90 days, an "Always On" backup of 1GB a month in 150+ countries (Holafly), and a six-month refund window for unactivated eSIMs. If your stay runs past a month, or you might cancel the trip, that counts.

Who stands behind ESIM KIMONO?

ESIM KIMONO is run by Fizen LLC. Fizen.io has 500,000+ app users and a strategic investment from Tether. The plan runs on KDDI, a licensed Japanese network, using a GSMA standard eSIM profile, and card payments go through Stripe, PCI DSS Level 1.

The QR code arrives by email within minutes, with no account and no app. Install it on home Wi-Fi before you fly. It is data only, with no phone number. If the eSIM is faulty, it is replaced one for one.

Which one fits your trip?

Holafly fits if you are staying longer than a month, traveling on to other countries, or want a long refund window before activation.

ESIM KIMONO fits if you are a heavy user who wants to know your speed rule before landing, you want a fixed-data option on the same network, and you want a named carrier and one-for-one replacement in writing.

FAQ

Is Holafly really unlimited in Japan?

There is no total data cap, but Holafly says a fair usage policy can reduce speed for up to a day, and it doesn't publish the threshold. Hotspot is capped at 1GB per day.

Why is Holafly slow in Japan?

Holafly attributes speed reductions to fair usage policies. Recent Japan reviews report slow speed with full signal; we couldn't verify the cause, so we only quote customers, with links.

How does ESIM KIMONO's price compare with Holafly?

We don't compete on price. Plans are priced for a carrier-grade network and a human who answers. Today's price is on the button below.

Which is better for hotspotting a laptop?

Neither unlimited plan is ideal. Holafly caps hotspot at 1GB a day, and ours runs at 10 Mbps. For heavy laptop use, a large fixed plan at full network speed usually works better.

What is Holafly's refund policy?

A full refund within 6 months if not activated. For connection problems, contact support during the trip; refunds can be full or partial. ESIM KIMONO replaces faulty eSIMs one for one.
