Nomad vs ESIM KIMONO in Japan: network, speed rules and support

Disclosure: ESIM KIMONO is our store. Competitor facts come from their own pages and public reviews, checked 13 October 2026, each linked.

Short answer: Nomad's Japan unlimited gives a daily high-speed allowance, then slows to 512 kbps until 24 hours after activation; a third-party review puts the allowance at 2GB a day. ESIM KIMONO's unlimited is a flat 10 Mbps from the first minute with no daily data cap, on KDDI. Light users under 2GB a day may never notice Nomad's limit; heavy users will feel it every evening.

What happens when data runs out at Shinjuku Station?

Day three, 6pm. You are standing in Shinjuku Station, with exits in every direction, and the map will not load. Your partner wants to call home before dinner. The restaurant search shows grey boxes where the photos should be. The plan is called unlimited, so you did not think about it.

That is what a daily allowance feels like. Fast all morning, then a crawl, right when you need directions out of a station you do not know.

The fix is a known carrier, a speed rule you can read before paying, a human who answers when it goes wrong, and a replacement if the eSIM is faulty.

How does Nomad's unlimited actually work?

Nomad's own wording: "throttled speed of 512kbps after you've used up your daily allocation. High-speed data will reset every 24 hours from the time you activate" (nomadesim.com). The allowance figure, 2GB a day, comes from a third-party review (projecttorii.com).

A Japan travel site put it bluntly: "Skip Nomad's unlimited tier; the throttle is harsh" (japantravelexpert.com). That is their opinion, not Nomad's terms.

At 512 kbps, messages and slow maps work. Video, video calls and photo-heavy pages struggle.

ESIM KIMONO's rule is one line: 10 Mbps flat, all day, no daily data cap. It is slower than full network speed, and our fair use page says so: fine for maps, calls, social and HD streaming on a phone, not for 4K or big laptop downloads. Our fixed plans run at full network speed, then 384 kbps once the data is used.

What do unhappy Nomad customers in Japan report?

Nomad holds 4.3★ from 45,795 Trustpilot reviews (Trustpilot), so most trips go fine. From the newest 1-2★ reviews mentioning Japan, pulled 13 October 2026, we kept 28. Fourteen involved no connection, activation trouble or dropouts. Eight mentioned slow or throttled data. Six said support was unhelpful.

This shows what goes wrong, not how often. One reviewer also reported blocked apps; we have not published our own eSIMs' IP region, so we make no claim there.

What stands behind ESIM KIMONO?

Plans are data only, with no phone number. Install on home Wi-Fi before you fly.

Where Nomad is the stronger pick: a 21-day unlimited length (we go from 15 to 30 days), add-ons on fixed plans, and multi-country coverage for a trip that continues past Japan.

How much data do you use in a day?

The choice comes down to one number. Check last month's mobile data (iPhone: Settings, Cellular; Android: Settings, Network, Data usage) and divide by 30. Then adjust for travel: more maps, more photos, and long train rides. Streaming on a two-hour Shinkansen ride can use more than the rest of the day combined.

Our site's guide is that most travelers use about 1GB a day, which is why we often point light users to a fixed plan, ours included.
