Short answer: if your Nomad Japan unlimited slows to a crawl at the same time each day, that is probably the plan working as designed: a daily high-speed allowance, then 512 kbps until 24 hours after activation. ESIM KIMONO's unlimited is a flat 10 Mbps from the first minute with no daily data cap, on KDDI, and it installs from a QR code on café Wi-Fi in about two minutes.

Day four, Hiroshima. The morning was easy: Peace Memorial Park, the ferry to Miyajima, a translated museum guide. At 3pm the data crawls. The okonomiyaki search shows no photos. The taxi app spins. The card terminal at the till wants a QR payment and your phone cannot load it. The evening call home will be a frozen face.
You thought unlimited meant unlimited. You are now on a café's Wi-Fi, deciding what to do with the six days left.
What you need is not a new price. It is a known carrier, a speed rule you can read before paying, a human who answers, and a replacement if something fails.
Nomad's terms: "throttled speed of 512kbps after you've used up your daily allocation. High-speed data will reset every 24 hours from the time you activate" (nomadesim.com). A third-party review puts the allowance at 2GB a day (projecttorii.com).
The reset follows your activation clock, not midnight. Activate at 3pm on arrival day and your high-speed day runs 3pm to 3pm. Use the allowance by lunchtime and you are at 512 kbps until 3pm.
Recent reviews also describe trouble that is not about the allowance:
In our sample of 28 recent Japan-related 1-2★ Nomad reviews, 14 involved no connection or dropouts and 8 involved slow data. Nomad holds 4.3★ from 45,795 reviews (Trustpilot), so most customers are fine.
If it is the allowance and you need more each day, a different plan is the fix. Nomad's unlimited plans do not support add-ons, per the projecttorii review.

Honest note: 10 Mbps is slower than Nomad's high-speed data before the allowance runs out. You trade a fast morning for a steady day. It handles maps, video calls, social and HD streaming on a phone, not 4K or large laptop downloads (/fup/). Our unlimited comes in 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days, so you can match the days left.
No signal on the new line? Follow our rescue card; it works anywhere, not just at airports. A person answers on chat, and a faulty eSIM is replaced one for one.
Behind it: KDDI on a GSMA standard eSIM profile, card payments on Stripe (PCI DSS Level 1), and Fizen LLC, whose Fizen.io app has 500,000+ users and a strategic investment from Tether. Plans are data only, with no phone number.
If the slowdown is the daily allowance, the plan is doing what its terms say, so we would not promise you a refund. If the eSIM never connected, or kept dropping with high-speed data left, that is a different case. Contact Nomad through its app with your order number, activation time, screenshots of remaining data next to a slow speed test, and where and when it happened. Six of our 28 sampled complaints were about support, so keep everything in writing. We cannot process Nomad refunds.
Where Nomad is the stronger pick: light users who rarely reach the allowance, travelers who want a 21-day unlimited length, and trips that continue across several countries.
Nomad's Japan unlimited has a daily high-speed allowance, then 512 kbps, resetting 24 hours from activation. If you have used the allowance, the plan is working as designed.
Add-ons are not supported on unlimited plans, according to a third-party review (projecttorii.com).
Yes. Install ours on Wi-Fi and set it as your data line.
Not before Nomad's daily allowance runs out. After that, a flat 10 Mbps is faster than 512 kbps.
