Android setup
Most recent Samsung and Pixel phones take an eSIM. Check yours in ten seconds, install at home, and three switches finish the job in Japan.
Dial *#06#. An EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must also be carrier-unlocked: a locked phone refuses a foreign eSIM whatever its model. Some regional models ship without eSIM, so the EID check beats any model list.
On home Wi-Fi: Settings, Connections, SIM manager, Add eSIM, then scan the QR from our email. Name the new line Japan. Do not delete it afterwards; a QR installs once.
On home Wi-Fi: Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, then add an eSIM and scan the QR. The wording differs slightly between Android versions; look for the option to download or add an eSIM.
Turn the Japan line on. Set it as the mobile data SIM. Turn roaming on for that line only, and keep your home line's data off. Bars on KDDI 4G or 5G usually appear within a minute.
Airplane mode on for ten seconds, then off. Check the data SIM and its roaming. Restart once. If bars show but nothing loads, ask support for the APN settings. Still stuck: the rescue card and a human on chat.
Dial *#06#. If an EID line appears and the phone is carrier-unlocked, it supports a travel eSIM.
Usually not; it sets itself. If bars show but no data loads, message support and a human sends the right APN settings.
Yes. Keep the home SIM on for calls and texts with its data off, and set the Japan eSIM as the data SIM.
