iPhone setup
Every iPhone from XS onward takes an eSIM. What trips people up is settings, so here they are, in order.
XS, XR and everything after, if carrier-unlocked. Dial *#06#: an EID line confirms it. A locked phone refuses foreign eSIMs regardless of model; check with your carrier before flying.
US models from iPhone 14 on are eSIM-only, which is convenient here: the travel eSIM installs alongside your home plan. iPhones hold multiple profiles and run two lines at once; nothing needs deleting.
Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM, Use QR Code, scan our email's code on home Wi-Fi, label the line Japan. Do not delete it after; a QR installs once. The full install guide covers both platforms.
Japan line ON. Cellular Data set to it. Data Roaming ON for that line, home line data off. Bars on KDDI usually show within a minute.
Airplane toggle ten seconds, check the data line and its roaming, restart once. Then the airport rescue card below walks the rest, and a human answers on chat and email.
Yes. Every iPhone from the XS onward supports eSIM, including all current models, as long as the phone is carrier-unlocked.
Yes. Both lines stay active: the Japan eSIM carries data, your home line stays reachable for calls and texts with its data switched off.
Recent iPhones store several eSIM profiles and run two lines at once. You can keep the Japan profile installed for a future trip; an expired plan simply stops carrying data.
