Short answer: Sakura Mobile is well reviewed (4.8★ on Trustpilot) and its 5G au unlimited has no speed restriction on the phone, but hotspot is capped at 6GB for 7 days. If you share data with tablets or a laptop, that cap is the deciding line. ESIM KIMONO runs on the same KDDI network at a flat 10 Mbps with no daily data cap, and each plan prints its hotspot rule at checkout.
Day two. The Shinkansen to Kyoto takes over two hours, and two kids want to watch something. You turn on hotspot. Two iPads streaming cartoons can use a few GB in an afternoon, and by the end of day three Sakura's 6GB weekly hotspot allowance could be gone.
Your phone still has data. The iPads do not. Then you reach Kyoto Station, the taxi app needs to load, the kids are tired, and the family is standing in a station you have never seen before.
That is not a fault on Sakura's side. It is the published rule: "truly unlimited, with no speed restrictions. You will only be limited in how much data you can tether/hotspot" (Sakura support). It is simply the wrong rule for a family sharing one phone.
What this family needs is a known carrier, a hotspot rule they can read before paying, a human who answers if something breaks, and a replacement if the eSIM is faulty.
Honest trade-off: on Sakura, the parent's own phone is faster, because there is no speed ceiling. With us, everything shares 10 Mbps. If hotspot is only occasional, Sakura gives the faster phone.

We read Sakura's 12 Japan-related 1 and 2★ Trustpilot reviews (13 Oct 2026). That is a small sample against a 4.8★ average, and several are about pocket WiFi or monthly SIMs, not the tourist eSIM. Three themes stand out:
We would rather you buy the right eSIM than ours. Choose Sakura if:

Either way, decide before landing at Narita or Haneda, not on arrival-hall Wi-Fi with two tired kids.
ESIM KIMONO is run by Fizen LLC. Fizen.io has 500,000+ app users and a strategic investment from Tether. The eSIM uses a GSMA standard profile on KDDI's licensed network, and card payments run on Stripe (PCI DSS Level 1). Plans are data only, with no phone number. Install on home Wi-Fi before you fly, and the line is ready when you land.
Yes. On the 5G au unlimited plan, hotspot is capped at 6GB for 7 days, 13GB for 14, 20GB for 21 and 30GB for 30 days (sakuramobile.jp, 13 Oct 2026).
Most plans allow hotspot, and each plan prints its rule at checkout. On unlimited, hotspot shares the flat 10 Mbps with no daily data cap.
For two devices streaming standard-definition video, generally yes. For several HD streams at once, expect buffering. Download content on Wi-Fi first.
We don't compete on price. Plans are priced for a carrier-grade network and a human who answers. Today's price is on the button below.
Only cellular iPad models support an eSIM. Wi-Fi-only iPads need a hotspot from a phone, which is why the hotspot rule matters so much for families.
