Disclosure: ESIM KIMONO is our store. Competitor facts come from their own pages and public reviews, checked 13 October 2026, each linked.
Short answer: Sakura Mobile and ESIM KIMONO both run on KDDI (au), so coverage on the ground is the same. Sakura's 5G unlimited has no speed restriction on the phone but caps hotspot by plan length; ours runs a flat 10 Mbps with no daily data cap, and each plan prints its hotspot rule at checkout. Pick Sakura for raw phone speed and long stays; pick us if your data is shared across devices and you want one rule you can read before paying.
Day four, Kanazawa. You have been shooting since sunrise and the previews are backing up to the cloud. At the station you open the map to find the bus to Shirakawa-go, and nothing loads. The café till wants a QR payment. Your partner is texting from the wrong exit, and you cannot read the message.
The fix is simple to describe: a known carrier, a speed rule you can read before you pay, a human who replies, and a replacement if the eSIM itself is faulty. Sakura Mobile and ESIM KIMONO both get the carrier part right. The differences are in the rules.
Both use KDDI, the au network, a licensed Japanese carrier. Sakura's 5G unlimited runs on au (sakuramobile.jp), and ESIM KIMONO runs on KDDI 4G/5G on every plan. Same towers, same coverage.
One thing to watch: Sakura also sells a 4G unlimited on Docomo that slows to 200 kbps after 3GB a day (sakuramobile.jp). If you choose Sakura for speed, make sure you buy the 5G au plan.
Sakura's own wording is clear: "truly unlimited, with no speed restrictions. You will only be limited in how much data you can tether/hotspot" (Sakura support). The hotspot allowance is 6GB on a 7-day plan, 13GB on 14 days, 20GB on 21 days and 30GB on 30 days.
ESIM KIMONO's unlimited plans run at a flat 10 Mbps from the first minute, with no daily data cap (fair use rule). Hotspot is allowed on most plans, and each plan's rule is printed at checkout. Fixed-data plans run at full network speed, then 384 kbps once the data is used, which still sends messages and loads a map.
For the photographer, that splits neatly. On the phone, Sakura's uncapped 5G uploads previews faster than our 10 Mbps. In the evening, 13GB of hotspot across 14 days is under 1GB a night for the laptop. If you tether every night, that line decides it.

Checked 13 October 2026.
Sakura's record is strong: 86.8% of its 1,540 Trustpilot reviews are 5★. We read the Japan-related 1 and 2★ reviews and found 12. Several are about pocket WiFi or monthly subscriptions, not the tourist eSIM, and some date from 2023 and 2024. A few are worth knowing before you buy:
Twelve complaints against 1,540 reviews is a small share. The lesson is practical: choose the 5G au plan, and save the APN settings before you fly.
If you want maximum phone speed and barely use hotspot, choose Sakura. We would rather you buy the right eSIM than ours.
You install on home Wi-Fi before flying, from a QR code that arrives by email in minutes, so the line is ready when the plane lands at Narita or Haneda. No account, no app, no passport queue at the airport counter.
If the eSIM is faulty, we replace it 1 for 1. Unused plans are refunded under the package terms. A real person answers on chat and at [email protected], and APN steps are written out for iPhone and Android.
Behind it: ESIM KIMONO is run by Fizen LLC. Fizen.io has 500,000+ app users and a strategic investment from Tether. The eSIM uses a GSMA standard profile on KDDI's licensed network, and card payments run on Stripe (PCI DSS Level 1). Plans are data only, with no phone number.
Sakura says its 5G au unlimited has "no speed restrictions" on the phone; only hotspot is capped (6GB per 7 days, 13GB per 14). Its 4G Docomo unlimited slows to 200 kbps after 3GB a day.
Both use au (KDDI). Sakura's 4G unlimited uses Docomo.
Yes, up to the plan's hotspot allowance. ESIM KIMONO allows hotspot on most plans, with the rule printed at checkout.
