Roaming vs eSIM
TravelPass is convenient and expensive: $12 every day your phone touches data in Japan, per Verizon's own page, checked late September 2026. Here is the honest math.
TravelPass is $12 per day in Japan, billed only on days you use it, with unlimited talk and text and 5GB of high speed data per day, then 3G speeds, per verizon.com. A $100 monthly international plan with 20GB exists; Verizon itself notes it beats TravelPass only past about nine days.
TravelPass triggers itself: one background app sync on arrival and the day is billed. If you keep your line's roaming on without a plan for it, the days add up before breakfast.
Seven days of TravelPass is $84. Our unlimited week on KDDI is $33.68 and 10GB for a week is $12.44, the live catalog checked October 22, 2026. Same phone, same trip, roughly a third of the cost, and your Verizon line stays reachable for calls with its data off.
A one or two day stopover where $12 or $24 is worth zero setup. A work phone you cannot install profiles on. Needing your US number for constant calls, not just texts and OTP codes. Everyone else is paying for convenience they can have anyway: the eSIM installs in two minutes at home.
Install the eSIM as the data line and turn Data Roaming OFF on Verizon. Data then runs on KDDI at local-plan prices. A call or text on your Verizon number can still start a $12 TravelPass day, so call over WhatsApp or FaceTime on the eSIM data instead. The install guide below has the exact taps.

Yes, on any unlocked eSIM phone. The travel eSIM carries data with Verizon's data roaming off. A call or text on the Verizon line can still start a $12 day, so keep calls to apps over the eSIM data.
