Short answer: One Japan eSIM covers Osaka, Nara, Kobe and Kyoto. ESIM KIMONO runs on KDDI 4G/5G, a licensed Japanese carrier, with a speed rule you can read before paying and real humans on chat if a phone stops working. For a family's five days, most phones need 5GB or 10GB for a week, and the teenager who posts all day suits unlimited at a flat 10 Mbps with no daily data cap.
It is 3pm at Universal Studios Japan. The family split up after lunch: one parent queuing with the younger teen, the other at the shops. The plan was to meet by the globe at 3:15.
Then the navigator's phone loses data. No park app, no group chat, no map. Somewhere in a crowd of thousands, two people are waiting at a meeting point and nobody can tell them about the change.
The evening repeats it in miniature. A takoyaki stall in Dotonbori takes QR payment and the page will not load. The teen cannot post the Glico sign, and on the train back the parent cannot check which Namba exit leads to the hotel.
Recent 1-2★ Trustpilot reviews mention Osaka by name:
These are individual reviews, not statistics, and both brands have far more positive reviews than negative ones.
Our honest limit: data only, no Japanese phone number. Calls go over WhatsApp, LINE or FaceTime.
| Person | Use | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Parent 1, the navigator | Maps, USJ app, bookings, translation | 10GB / 7 days |
| Parent 2 | Messaging, photos, some maps | 5GB / 7 days |
| Teen 1, posts all day | Stories, short videos, music | Unlimited 5 days |
| Teen 2, moderate | Social, messaging | 5GB / 7 days |
Fixed plans run at full network speed until the data is used. Hotspot is allowed on most plans, and each plan's rule is printed at checkout, so sharing is possible. In practice, four phones on one 10 Mbps connection feels slow at a theme park, and it ties everyone to one battery. Separate plans keep each person reachable.
The most common way a family runs out on a fixed plan is automatic photo and cloud backup over mobile data. Turn it off for cellular before the trip and let it run on hotel Wi-Fi at night. With that one setting, 5GB for a week is realistic for most people. A single day of 4K park video can use more than the rest of the trip combined, which is why the heaviest poster is the one who should get unlimited.
Yes. ESIM KIMONO plans cover all of Japan on KDDI. One eSIM covers the whole trip.
5GB to 10GB for a week is plenty for most people; heavy video posting suits unlimited.
Install on Wi-Fi at home first. At KIX, turn on the Japan line and Data Roaming. If there is no signal, use the airport rescue card, then message us on chat.
It is possible on most plans, but four phones on one 10 Mbps hotspot is slow at a busy park and ties everyone to one phone. Separate plans usually work better.
Use the airport rescue card, then contact our human support. A faulty eSIM is replaced 1 for 1.
